Wheel care between visits

How to Clean Car Wheels Between Details

To clean car wheels between details, first check the care directions for your wheel's finish. If they allow a mild wash, let the wheel cool, clean it gently, and rinse well.

Check first

What finish do your car wheels have?

The finish is the surface or coating on the wheel. Find the care directions for your vehicle or wheels before choosing soap or a tool. For example, Toyota's directions for its SuperChrome and alloy accessory wheels and Ford's directions for its clearcoated aluminum wheels and covers cover different finishes. Neither set of directions tells you what finish is on your car.

If a mild wash is allowed

How can you wash wheels when mild soap is allowed?

Let the wheel cool. If your wheel's care directions allow an ordinary mild wash, use water, mild car-wash soap, and a soft sponge or cloth. Rinse promptly and thoroughly. Toyota gives these steps for its named accessory wheels; Ford also advises a cool wheel, gentle sponge work, and rinsing for its covered clearcoated wheels. Follow the directions for your own finish if they differ.

Avoid abrasive tools or strong cleaners unless your wheel's specific care directions approve them. Toyota warns against scouring tools and chemical cleaners on its named accessory wheels. Ford warns that strong cleaners and brush work can wear the clearcoat on its covered wheels. Those warnings do not mean every wheel has the same finish or care needs.

Know when to pause

When should you stop cleaning a wheel yourself?

If you cannot identify the finish, or if it is cracked, flaking, corroded, or otherwise damaged, pause before using a cleaner or rubbing the surface. Ask the wheel maker or a qualified wheel professional what is safe. That is a cautious choice because the right care depends on the finish. If buildup remains after an allowed gentle wash, do not assume stronger scrubbing will remove it safely.

What does RANA's exterior detail include?

RANA's Exterior Detail Reset includes wheel and tire cleaning as part of its outside clean. It is not a wheel repair service, and these home care tips do not describe RANA's work method. If you are deciding between a quick wash and a larger clean, see car wash versus detailing. Tell RANA what you see on the wheels when you request an exterior detail.
